Hannche with chicks
Last Tuesday we celebrated another of our dear friend’s birthday at Off the Grill. Happy Birthday, Hannche! Another year has swiftly passed. Another chunk of Abs ( 6th of the 6pack ) has popped out of your belly. LOL. Hannche Bobis is one guy you must get acquainted with. He is a NUT-ural comedian. He always shares his smiles even after a hard day’s work at Fitness First. He is a cycling instructor at this prestigious club, by the way. Ans also, he excels in Mathematics. Darn, he even solved a trick problem from my daughter, Pia’s Math Worksheet. Whichi had unsuccessfully attempted to solve for 2 hours… ahem, 20 minutes I mean. I remember him helping out Christian Bautista’s former girlfriend Rachelle Ann Go with her Math something subject. This was during the time we were still playing often for Christian’s shows.

Hannche joined Fairground back in 2006. He used to session for us as we were short of finding the right member at the time. And his coming to the group was yet another major step forward on our musical journey. His skill as a musician has brought new flavor to the raw and carefree sound the band tries to express.
Currently, Hannche is busy with work and playing for other artists like Gladys Guevarra. He also arranges songs for our friend Nina’s Wave radio show. His works were included in Nina’s latest album Renditions of the Soul. This another album you shouldnt fail to listen to.
Happy Birthday, bro!

Rommel’s birthday fell on the same day we had our special Monday gig at Off the Grill. This was possible thanks to the kindness of Sir Butch, Jet(sound engineer) and Pido who willingly gave way to our request for a change of gig sked just for that week due to a previous engagement. So we took his slot on Monday, September 21 while he played on our regular Tuesday show. Thanks again.
Rommel Lumanog just turned 21! 10 years ago. HAHAHAHA. There’s nothing much to say about Rommel except that he is one great singer with the knack for LAW and the Legal System. We are happy to have the privilege of working with him for the last 11 months. He is usually silent when Margaret is not around, but boy, you’ll never imagine he has a rubber throat when he belts out popular songs from the great band, Journey. What strikes me most about him is his professionalism. He rarely comes to work late, amidst the daily hectic school schedule and everything. The band wishes you a very fruitful career and a healthy life.

We also had a second treat for that night because my very dear friend and former Sax player Rico Sobrevinas dropped by to catch up on a lot of things. He also jammed with us on the 1st set. We had lots of stories to share but time’s short with good friends(sigh). Hannche was able to play on our second and third sets.

Friends came, though not all of them, nonetheless, the fellowship was a BLAST! FUN FUN FUN, and it blasted a big hole on each one’s pocket. But by golly wow, we had our own take-home of tempura, spicy crabs, calamares, porkchop, buttered chicken and a whole lot of full sized GRIN on our faces. First we enjoyed ourselves with a game or two of bowling. Amateurs and pros (like Josh) alike. Hahaha. The highest scorer for the night was William Cabelin using his LAKAS-TIRA, LAKAS CHAMBA technique. Peace bro!

We had two muses for that night, Haylee and In-Sun, our import from South Korea courtesy of Angela. Kidding aside, we really felt the need to re-connect ourselves with our special friends thats why the gathering. It is this chance that we often get to know more of ourselves and each other as well, and most importantly, it gives us the chance to discover that we have simply gained friends united with the most common interest in life. Its simply the power of MUSIC.

The recent typhoon left a devastating mark within all of us. It is due to this reason that I have decided to briefly halt update of the site. Plus the fact that the band had each of their hands full of so many things to do and friends, Angela, Randy, Criss, Ms. Elsa, former bandmates Dexter Ayala and Rico Sobrevinas to name a few, to help out amidst the storm and after it has raged over Manila. There are no words to describe how I feel about losing so many things in such short time. I feel for all of you friends. But I still am happy that you guys are all okay. When times like these come, I always remember Faye’s dad’s words, God doesn’t take away anything from you, He’s merely preparing you for an UPGRADE.

We had a blast last night at Off the Grill celebrating the ?th birthday of our (web)monstrous friend… Randy. My former officemates, at least technically, at dotPH were there to join the happenings. As I was not a web developer nor a web designer, somehow these people made me feel comfy at work. We got to meet new FS3 friends as well. Anyways, so much for the talk. More of the these…

Randy turns 21 today (10 years ago). Peace bro. So much for the counting. Men don’t usually care about them anyway. Seriously, Randy has been a special part of the band since it started way back April 12, 2005 when it came to be called Fairground. Well, as far as I can remember, the first time I came to know Randy was some time October of 2004, Bagaberde Pasig. Randy together with William Cabelin, regularly drops by to watch Nina perform. The band got to meet them and we have been good friends ever since. Randy is a webmaster, developer, designer, a blogger… short… jack of all trades. And he’s great at it. Go check out Nina’s site. Fortunately, he created our online home too. As I recall, during the most difficult times of the band, Randy was one of the many special friends that kept our spirits up. And for that, Fairground thanks you. I, personally thank you and your beautiful wife Mau for being there for us. May this birthday be just the beginning of a year filled with happy memories, wonderful moments and shining dreams.

Last night Fairground got to play with another new face: Enter Tina of the band IMPULSE. Angela, who had prior holiday plans had to skip last nights gig at off the grill because she had a family affair to attend to, had to hand over vocal duties to Tina. Last night was pretty interesting, for aside from the pouring rain another surprise was in store, Richard our session bass player had an emergency meeting, so he could not make it. Luckily for us Ibey Haber, our resident session player (hopefully for now), opted to fill Richard’s place. Last night was a bit nostalgic gig of sort, having to play some songs we haven’t played in a long time. Songs like Through The Fire, Paano and much more were dug out from the depths of our memories and luckily we pulled it through. Only just though… The regulars were there as well, thank you very much to Tanta for coming, of course we can’t forget our good friend who’s always itching for a jam, Mike Velasco for playing a very nostalgic version of Please Don’t Ask Me, Margaret for bringing her friends, Faye’s cousin JM and his wife Eve who jammed with us, Eugene Adalia, Leo’s good friends from school, Vincent and his lovely wife Lalaine. Plus special thanks to Tina’s friends who came, so sorry I could not remember all the names; and to the other people I forgot to mention, my sincerest apologies. Last night was a revelation for me and the band, I hope I can always continue to play at that level and still keep reminding ourselves about having fun in the process. After our gig, Wednesday, its a special night at Off the Grill for its Side A and Freestyle playing back to back. Its going to be an interesting couple of weeks at Off the Grill. Next week its status quo again. I’m looking forward to the coming weeks…
